Filming Taken in December

This is the filming I took today, I think there's a lot of useful footage in there, however there is also a chance to go out and get more footage. I really appreciate my artist for performing so well in such cold condition as it was freezing outside and I made her wear tights, a skirt and leotard.

Change of Ideas

Since we have been unable to film on location (Bridlington) for the last two weeks and with the weather getting colder, I believe it's unlikely that we will get to Bridlington to film again and it would be irresponsible to make the cast going into the weather at sub zero temperatures. For this reason I have changed my storyboard and location to a forest/wood as this can also connote being lost and since the trees no longer have leaves it will effective as it will convey the message of feeling bare and lonely. Which is one of the messages I aim to get across in my music video as it's how the artists feels because she's lost her partner so it's as if a part of her is missing.

Organizing filming

This is the arrangements I made for filming tomorrow. I'm going to film Shannon tomorrow as Niall is unavailable and explained what she needs to bring college and at what time to meet me and where.

Post Modern Media and Pop

Postmodernism : a late 20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterized by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories.

Postmodernism does not have a concrete meaning because we're still living in this period however it has features that we associate it with it such as:

- Parodies
- Pastiches
- Simulacrum
- Intertexuality
- Hyper reality.
- eclectic borrowing

Post modernism suggest that we can no longer create anything new and everything that is created now, has been done in the past. An example of this is One Directions "What Makes You Beautiful" the beginning instrumental is the simulacrum of "Grease" "Summer Nights" however One Direction's is done with an electric guitar and other instruments. - You can listen to it below.

The mise en scene is also set on the beach which relates to the comment made by Doody "Hey I wanna hear what Danny did at the beach", subsequently the beginning of the film is set at the beach with Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton John) this relates to the ideology we have as teens of "Summer loving" or a Summer fling. A boy and girl meet during the holidays, at the beach, fall in love. Because this is portrayed through the media is blurs the lines between what is real and fiction (hyper reality) and we believe this will happen to us.

Mcfly's "Love Is On The Radio, is also Post Modern and parodies Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Miley Cyrus's music video of Wrecking Ball, Pink's - Try and many otheres. It also uses emoticons(digital media). and makes is accessible to a wide audience using sign language which is blending different medias. It  breaks the fourth wall, by addressing the fact that camera is there - Dougie wipes the screen.

Aftermath of yesterdays weather.

These videos show the tidal surges that occured yesterday causing mass flooding in the humber area. This shows the severity of the weather and why we were unable to film, especially in the water, due to strong tides/winds.

Thursday 5 December 2013

5/12/2013

Due to the weather in Bridlington/Hull (East Riding/Humber Area) I am unable to film. Strongs winds have been battering the coastal area and we would be putting ourselves at risk to film as we could be swept to sea. Moreover the winds will make it hard for the talent to perform due to to hair/clothing getting in the way.

Prop List

They only props my artist needs in her ballet shoes, since it's mainly performance I don't plan to have any other props

Saturday 30 November 2013

Camera

This is the camera I will use to film my music video with, I shall also use a tripod to catch steady HQ footage.

Friday 29 November 2013

Tide Times

The Highest tide is at 05:40 in the morning, and the lowest is at 12:00 p.m so I shouldn't get caught within the tide for it should be going out at the time I'll be at Bridlington which is 8-9a.m

Risk Assessment For Bridlington

As You can see there are major hazards such as temperature and the sea which would cause fatal injuries however as long as the cast/production team remain sensible and aware we should be ok.

Thursday 28 November 2013

Bridlington Forecast for 5/12/13

The early forecast for Bridlington next Thursday morning shows between 2-3 degrees and overcast which is still the perfect weather to create pathetic fallacy. I realise that it will feel even colder on the sea front, so I'll need to prepare by taking towels, blankets, flasks of warm drink and money for hot food.

The chance of rain in the morning is 0% which is really good as it won't interfee with filming.

The wind is pretty fast, however it shouldn't interfee much with filming as I'm not recording sound. It may effect the Talent, such as hair getting in face so I'll make sure it's gripped back if need be.

Sun rise  is due at 8:03 am which means we need to get there beforehand to set up. We'll probably have to set off at 6a.m, due to the fact we'll only get a round about an hour and a bit before we have to set back to college for lessons that the talent have.

Filming

We was unable to film yesterday due to unforeseen circumstance that saw my Female Talent not able to film because she was ill. Due to other work commitments from all off us. We aim to go early next Thursday morning so we have enough time to film before lessons. I shall have to re plan the trip, looking at weather and sunrise again. We shall aim to get the house scenes filmed this weekend too so we haven't been pushed back that much.

Friday 22 November 2013

Bridlington forecast Wednesday 27/11/13 (First Look)

This is my first look at what the forecast for next Wednesday will be in Bridlington, it's very likely that it'll change but it will help my plan ahead. I aim to go around dinnertime, leaving college straightaway with my artists. Provisionally there is 0% of rain forecasted for the hours we aim to be in Bridlington, the wind is 12mph so it won't be that windy however it may feel cold since we will be on the sea front so I shall prepare by taking warm clothes for the cast and towels for when they get out of water. It may be a good idea to also bring a flask of hot drink to make sure no-one gets to cold. It's also forecasted to be cloudy which is the ideal weather I want to create the pathetic fallacy of sadness/heartbreak.

I've also checked the directions on google maps so we should approximately arrive around 2 if not earlier depending on how quickly we get out of college and traffic.

The sun is due to set at 3:46 which gives is approximately 1 hour and 46 minutes to get filming done. However we may have come back another Wednesday as these are the only time myself, the talent and our designated driver is free. Since we all work.

I'll treat everyone to cheesy chips (Since it's our all time favourite food.) at the end of the day as thanks for helping me out and standing in the cold.

On monday I shall check the forecast, and sunset again to see if the weather as changed as well as on Tuesday night and Wednesday Morning.

Concept 4

My recent Idea which I've had expands on my first initial Idea of a long term relationship in which P!NK and her long term boyfriend have fallen out of love however they stay together because there not quite sure who they are without each other. I was thinking of the reflecting parts of the videos to be in Black and White and one of the main locations being a Beach as it suggests being lost. I also like the idea of using the sea to dance in so the dance sequence would take part in there. Other parts of the music video would take part in the home of the boyfriend and girlfriend who are both in separate rooms looking frustrated and upset. Throughout the video there would be a build up of the arguing and falling apart, maybe by editing it, so it's sped up to show the increase of the make up/fight/make up/fight idea. This would Climax when the music/lyrics does. My idea at the end is to create a twist which would be the boyfriend leaving the house as the talent(main artist) sits against the bathroom wall, where the camera pans to show a positive pregnancy test as it's unexpected to the viewer and it's able to be related to by the target audience. It would make the active viewers wonder what would happen afterwards.

Audience Profile

This is a profile to show that type of things my audience also like such as Designs, TV Shows, Hobbies and Books as well as the social network sites they'd use. The social network sites are quite important as it would be ways to advertise my music video to fans as it's a fast way to advertise due to the proliferation of the use in them.

Audience Research Results

I created this work using Smartdraw, a software which I downloaded. it was easy to navigate however I thought it wasn't that modern and got bored of using it easily.

However my results show that 95% of the people who took my poll are female which suggests Females are possibly more active viewers than Males and will relate more to the denotation and look into the connotations of a media text as they're possibly more active thinkers.

Piktochart was also another infographic site I came across, it was quite fun to use and had lots of graphics, however it was limitied to what I could use as a free user.

The Piktochart shows the result of the most popular favourite genre which is IndieRock with Pop ranking in 2nd place at 24% this could be due to the generation in which voted with the majority being between the ages of 16-18 as an older generation may be more interesting in classical and a younger generation such as early teens may have seen a rise in the popularity of Pop.

What these results show is that Viewers are more likely to buy a song if it has a music video as it puts visuals to the audio. A Narrative based video is also most popular this could be because it's more verisimilitude than what an abstract or performance based music video is and therefore the viewer can relate. This also relates back to the age range who have voted with the majority as teenagers as teens tend to look towards lyrics and other media texts for meaning in which they can relate too or fantasize about. Moreover most of the voters listen to music everyday therefore they probably listen to a range of genres and artists.

P!NK

P!nk tends to wear eccentric outfits for her music videos which are highly themed and performance based videos. Basically P!nk likes to get dressed up. I've taken this into account when thinking of costume ideas for my music video as I think it will help me convey the codes and convention of the pop genre music videos. Her clothes can also be quite 'sexy' and revealing which is what I've tried to do in my costume designs but slightly more subtle for the reason that the artist is under the age of 18 but however so it would  appeal to "The Male Gaze."

Friday 15 November 2013

Make Up

For the dance sequence I want dark make up to represent to death of romance such such as smokey eye make up and dark lips seen above.

For the house scenes I want minimal make up, which looks neautral to gain the everyday look and also not having much hope. It's also to suggest the female has just woken up.

Costume Ideas

These costumes would be used for the house scene's. I liked the thought of using oversized T-shirts/shirts because it's seen as sexy a convention seen in Pop music videos and relates to Laura Mulvey's theory of 'The Male Gaze' as men would be attracted to watch the video because it's sexy and females would want to be like the artist. The hair is down and straight which suggests a more laid back look.

These costumes would be used for the dance sequence. They'd have bare feet because it's more contemporary dance. I like the use of a black leotard as it's easier to dance and more professional. I like the use of an attached black floaty skirt which is ripped that I could easily make out of chiffon material which I can get from local stores such as Boyes. I already have a Black leotard which can be used so cost would be minimal. I also like the use of just a leotard with black netting across the face like a fascinator as it shows a sign of death therefore connotes the death of passion within the relationship. The chiffon shawl around her arms/shoulder has a connotation of going out (seen on evening gowns for higher class balls/proms.) It would also be good to dance with and be use to manipulate the dancers. The hair for the first design is in a low bun because it's out the way of the dancer however it may cause issues if it comes undone during the performance. I like the use of curly hair for the performer in the second image which I can pin back off the face so it wouldn't prevent the audience from seeing facial expressions.

The costumes would be appropriate for the house scenes are there casual chilled clothes. The bare chest and joggers has connotations of night wear and it's all conventional the Pop Music Videos as it gives of the Ideology the artists are desirable. (Good Looking, Hot, Attractive, fit.)

The use of the Tuxedo is appropriate to the dance sequence as it matches the evening attire sequence. However I'm not sure how practical it would be to dance in and would need to have costume rehearsals first to illuminate problems. If there is problems I will rethink choreography or come up with more ideas for the male dance costume which may be with out the suit jacket that could cause restriction or overheating of the artist. it may be appropriate just suit trousers, white shirt and a lose bow tie. or even just suit trousers and bare chest.

Thursday 14 November 2013

Location Ideas

A location Idea which I've thought about would be it taking place on a beach as this has connotations of being physically/mentally lost and can be seen in Music Videos such as "Try" by Pink, "Skyscraper" by Demi Lovato and and "I knew you where Trouble" by Taylor Swift.

The artist is mentally lost because they've fallen out of love. I also thought that the dance sequences would look good taking place in the sea, because it'll create splashes of water to add to the turmoil/passion of the video.

The rest of my video would take place in a house to suggest that this is where the artists lives. It gives connotations of domestication and family. I'm thinking of placing the protagonist (main artist) and the antogonist in different rooms to show they're apart. The idea of having an antogonist and protagonist relates to Levi Strauss Theory of Binary Opposites (1958) which suggests things must contrast. The idea of Binary opposites links with ideological values and how we percieve the world. Representations re-represent them self to an audience to assue understanding, meaning and recognition from a text is understood. Therefore by having contrast in characters it reassures the viewer that the artist is the protagonist.

Lyric Analysis

Within the Chorus of the song, between How Did we get so mean - Normally I'm so strong it features Butch Walker. This happens in every chorus except from the last repeat.

Ideas

I like the use of narrative and mise en scene used in Demi Lovato's "Made In The USA" to give the ideology that we believe life to be like in America such as going to Carnivals and soldiers going to war.

Furthermore I like the use of performance by the Artist (lovato) as well as the narrative of the storyline (Soldier going to war, leaving lover behind) running parallel to it. This is an idea I might use in my video.

Textual Analysis - Number 3

P!NK's Try - is a performance based music video that follows the narrative of P!NK and her partner in a relationship that is strained but also full of passion which relates back to the song title 'Try' because they want to try and make the relationship work.

The Mise En Scene of the coloured powder that is on both the performer and sometimes explodes could suggest bruises/scars for example Pink has a yellow powdered eye so it could suggest she's been hit in the face by her partner. However it could also suggest the passion between the two because throughout the video when they touch their explosions of coloured powder therefore it could show the chemistry.

Pink wears a navy see through ripped ankle length dress which could suggest the relationship falling apart where as it being see through creates the impression that they don't hide anything from each other. This costume relates back to Laura Mulvey's Theory (1975) of 'The Male Gaze.' also known as 'Voyeurism' because of the way Pink is displayed in the see through material which shows bare skin and her underwear. Which could possibly attract males to watch the video and make woman desire to be her.

In addition the first shot which is a location shot shows the mise en scene of a dessert which could connote being lost physically or mentally. In this example I believe it is mentally lost/confused within the relationship and not sure of what to do.

It's then followed by a close up of P!NK crawling along the dessert which could suggest desperation and the need for help. The juxtaposition of the two shot together is unconventional and does not follow the rules of film syntax which infers to the viewers that is something bad has happened or is about to happen such as a fight in a relationship.

The ending long shot of the plants in the desert suggests the ideology that life will always get better and moves on even in the most challenging of times.

The sound is diegetic to the artists as they use direct correlation to the beat they dance to and the beat of the music; which is effective because when the melody/beat becomes faster or reaches a climax the dance routine follows and therefore intrigues the audience making them want to buy the song through visuals.

The use of continuity editing allows the viewer to focus on the performance of Pink and her partner which could also give the representation that the fighting is continuous.

Conventions Of Pop

Textual Analysis - Number 2

Love is Easy - McFly is a performance based music video that reflects "Michael Shores" 1984 Theory of Audio Visual Poetry as it uses recycled styles seen through the Mise En Scene and Sound. For example the costumes which McFly wear - Black Trousers, White Shirt, Orange Tie, Checkered Waist coast and bowling shoes recreates the style from the early 1900's which gives the ideology that McFly are gentlemen because they are dressed in the clothes from an era where wearing suites stereotyped you as a gentleman. Moreover the sound clip from "It's A Wonderful Life" - "You want the moon, just say the word and I'll throw a lasooe around it" has high connotations of love and romance which is the representation McFly are trying to get across in the video. It also create intertexuality as it's addressing other media products outside of the diegesis of the music video.

The video is Performance based as 'McFly' sing in an empty auditorium which could suggest rehearsals and then towards the end there is a panning shot that shows the auditorium full with fans it then pans round back to McFly who are holding a mini stage of the stage they're performing on, the camera zooms in to show them closing the curtains which says 'For The Fans' which suggests that it's the end of the song and the video has been made to say thanks to the fans and that McFly appreciate there support and 'Loving the fans is easy.' This would be the audience of stereotypically young girls aged 13-18 feel like they're connected with McFly and that they're acknowledged by them.

In addition while performing the director has made links with the sound to the imagery for example when Tom sings 'Today I'm laughing the clouds away' while Dougie holds makeshift clouds on a pole above Tom's head when Tom says 'Away' he moves the clouds from above the head; this is used to create a visual video against the audio track.

Moreover the narrative of the video could also be a reflection of their Journey in the music industry up to now, and how much they love playing their music, this can be seen through the use of Mise-en-scene like when Danny is accepting an award at a podium which could suggest when they've won awards. Furthermore the use of the striped colour boards that they sing in front of us is recycled style from one of their first music videos 'Five Colours In Her Hair' when they on a stage with the striped colours as background. The use of this mise en scene connotes Michael Shores theory 1984 theory of recycled styles and how this could be a video reflecting the bands Journey.

The opening shot is a long a shot track, which follows Tom up the stairs onto the stage while he plays a Pink ukulele this effect invites the audience (McFly Fans mainly female aged between 13-25)  into the video allowing them to feel a part of it.

The video uses continuity editing which suggests that the relationship they are singing about flows and they don't have troubles within it; therefore the continuity editing reflects the song title "Love Is Easy."

Textual Analysis of 3 videos - Number 1

Skyscraper - Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato's - Skyscraper holds the conventions of Theorist, Sven Carlsson. Carlsson's theory (1999) said when a music video mostly shows an artist singing or dancing it is a performance clip. In Skyscraper Lovato sings to the camera of her heart break and the strength she has gained from overcoming her previous relationship.

The use of low pan angles makes Lovato look tall creating the imagery of a Skyscraper; it also has connotations of being strong and powerful and could represent her moving on from her previous relationship or a previous trouble. The song could possibly infer Lovato's suffering with an eating disorder and that she is trying to move on and rise above her troubles.

Lovato wears a white ankle length loose dress, with crucifix earrings, she also has the cross tattooed onto her hands showing that the video could have religious connotations which can relate to the landscape and the black/red cloth that in some parts of the video she is tangled in which could suggest the devil. In my opinion the mise en scene and theme of religion relates to "The Temptation of Christ" a parable in the Bible; where after fasting for 40 days/night the devil appears to Jesus in the Judaean desert where he attempts to tempt Jesus. However this could have be developed in the case of  Lovato's song to her ex-boyfriend being the devil and she will not be tempted to come to him and therefore rise above him "like a Skyscraper". "Skyscraper" has connotations of power and strength, because of this it's an appropriate simile as it represents Demi overcoming her past love/relationship.

The text could appeal to the audience which would generally be females aged 14-20 who are going through a break up this is due to the  narrative of the piece as well as the ideological beliefs that people will come too from hearing the lyrics " Do you have to, make me feel like there is nothing left of me? as this could represent the argument that led to the break up that people particularly the audience can relate too. I believe the audience is the younger generation because they seem to look for more meaning in songs than the older generation and it always seem that every song "relates to something that is happening in their life."

The mid shot of Lovato stood behind a white square frame on a pole where the glass has been smashed could represent the media and how she is been portrayed with the news/tabloids. The glass is broken, so this could represent her rebelling against what the media is saying about her and showing her fans that the media will not bring her down and she will rise above them "Like a skyscraper."

The mise en scene of the heart in glass holds connotations of being fragile which could be due the break up however the mise en scene also links with the lyrics "Go on and try and tear me down, like I made of glass, Like I'm made of paper... I will be rising from the ground, like a skyscraper." This could infer that Lovato no longer cares for her previous lover, and that no matter how hard he tries to hurt her and make her feel bad, he can do it because she isn't going to listen to him and she's just going to carry on rising above him and bettering herself.

Moreover the juxtaposed cut of the close up which sees Lovato move her hand towards her heart followed by the close up of the heart in glass adds to the representation of a heart of glass. Universally we believe that after a break up a person can be fragile and this is what I believe the cut/close up represents.

Overall the montage edits have a mixture of fast and slow paces which sometimes reflects the pace of the song for example when Lovato gets passionate over what she's singing about/stronger towards the end the end of the song the cuts are mainly fast.

In conclusion I think Lovato's video of "Skyscraper" could have many connotations it could represent heart break, overcoming her illness or how the media (E.g. newspapers, tabloids, magazines) tries to control her life.

Target Audience

The target Audience for the Pop Rock genre is generally 13-21 year old this is because they are typically able to relate to the songs and it's one of the most mainstream styles of music therefore it's promoted through the Media with the artists appearing in tabloids, Social Media and on TV which is most popular amongst the younger generation of teens and young adults. I also believe my main gender audience to be Female as P!nk and her music is quite iconic within society and many females look to her as an idol due to her meaningful lyrics and wild/strong feminist nature. To many females they want to be her because she confident enough to wear revealing clothes but is not afraid to sing about her personal life/love life to a million people. However my video also may appeal to males due to the use of "The Male Gaze." as well as male's who may also be able to relate to the song.

History Of Music Videos

1894 - Edward B.Marks and Joe Stern hired George Thomas an Electrition to put together a set of images to artists songs, to help promote them. This became known as the illustrated song.

1926 - The arrival of talkies saw the development of many short musical films. Vitaphone shorts (Warner bros. production) featured many bands, vocalists and dancers. Animation artist Max Fleischer introduced a series of sing-along short cartoons called Screen Songs, which invited audiences to sing along to popular songs by "following the bouncing ball".

Musicals where also contributors to the contemporary music video such as 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes', 'West Side Story' and 'Summer Holiday' as this allowed artists to sell the music and influence the future generation such as West Side Story dance fights do in MJ's 'Thriller' and 'Diamonds Are A Girls Bestfriend' on Madonna's 'Material Girl'.
The Late 1950's saw the development of the Scopatine. A visual Jukebox in france which allowed French artists to produce short films to be viewed alongside there songs.

1961 - Canadian show Singalong Jubileebegan pre-recording the music audio, went on-location and taped various visuals with the musicians lip-synching, then edited the audio and video together.

1964 - Beatles 'A Hard Days Night' directed by Richard Lester was seen as a Mock Documentary with videos accompanying hit songs.

1965 - The Beatles start making promotional clips for songs as seen in the clip below

1966 - 1968 Saw The Monkees create a hit US Series following the same modal of performing songs. And Can be seen below the Pilot Episode

1966 - Also saw one of the first Music Videos as we know it by Bob Dylan "Subterranean home sick blues" filmed by D.A. Pennebaker; saw Dylan shuffling cards in a city back alley.

1970's - Top Of The Pop begins

1972-73 Bowie creates promotional clips for "Jean Genie" and other from "Hunky Dory"

1975 - Queen Creates Bohemian Rhapsody one of the videos to be edited on made on Video Tape

1981 - US launched MTV airing "Video Killed The Radio star"

1983 - Michael Jackson's 14 minute long "Thriller" was aired on MTV, an iconic moment for African American artist who rarely saw there music played.

1983 Onwards - Music videos have continued to become more and more popular; expanding across TV channels and the internet such as Youtube.

Music videos (Mainly pop) have gone from the artists performing dance routines and singing,  fully clothed, as seen in Billie Piper's "Because We Want Too" - an example of Sven Carlsson's theory. To females dressed in barely anything which shows example of Laura Mulvey's theory of "The Male Gaze" where females can be viewed as objects as seen in "Pour It Up" - Rihanna.

Song Choice and artist (style)

The song I have chosen is Mean - P!NK from her fifth studio album "Funhouse"

I chose this because the song inspired with me ideas for my music video and it did not have an official music video already created so there was not the fear of plagiarizing an original copy.

P!nk's music falls under the genre of pop and pop rock which is a mainstream genre in the music industry and has a huge market in music videos. She is known for being the artist who changed the scope of pop music and breaking the boundaries in the industry. Her music videos are always "out of the box" (as seen below) which gives me inspiration to the push boundaries with mine however on a low budget.

Try is a performance based music video where P!NK performs a contemporary dance alongside broadway dancer Colt Prattes. The video is effective because it shows the passion and hardship within a relationship through the use of performance which reflects Sven Carlsson's theory(1999).

P!NK is not afraid to laugh at society and to highlight problems within our generation which can be seen through the music video of "Stupid Girls" which highlights the obsession of "Being Skinny" and having "The look" however Pink is controversial by laughing at "Fake" people and making out it's not all that it is. The music video is effective because P!NK is an influential artist and therefore young females will listen to her and realise being "Popular" and a "Celebrity " is not all that it's looked up to be. The video uses Tessa Perkins theory of Stereotype which can be seen through the 'Paris Hilton' type characters.

Summer Work

The Summer work was to do a 30 second story board of a music video of you chosen genre and analysis the cinematography/mise-en-scene/sound/editing to learn conventions.

Katy Perry - Part Of Me

Prologues are not unconventional to Pop music videos and can also be seen in , Pink's "Trouble", Beyonce's  "If I Were A Boy" and Taylor Swift's "White Horse", it helps to set the story and forward the narrative. It also engages the fewer.

P!nk's prologue for "Trouble" is quite basic, with long, mid and close up shot's. It basically set's the scene through the use of Mise-en-scene and action/reaction from the people within the shots however there is no speech.

Beyonce's - If I Were Boy, is also a pretty simplicity prologue, by just using lone words, which you could infer as describing relationships; "Honesty", "Commitment" etc.

Taylor Swifts - "White Horse" Has speech constantly running through it, during instrumentals. However the prologue is used to the set the scene then the rest of the music video is a flash back to how Swift got to the situation. The same clip is then repeated at the end, however it gives the audience the answer which Swift gives to her ex.
