Digipak Cases - Analysis/Breakdown

This is the style of Digipak I will use with an image on the left insert which maybe a lyrics booklet that is quite conventional to Digipaks

Ancillary Text - Album Cover Examples

These are album covers of artists who are off the Pop/Rock Genre, some of which are influenced by P!NK such as Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry. As you can see it's conventional to have an album title as well as the artists name along the top quarter, bottom quarter or the left hand side. The image/mise en scene on the cover reflects the concept of the album. The framing of the images range from close ups to long shots. The title of the album also tends to be a song title in the album which can be seen in 4/6 album covers (P!NK, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry.)

"Pink's - The Truth About Love" which shows P!nk in a revealing black crop top, black hot pants and red stilletos. These are all colours that have connotations of Love/Sex/Passion which is conventional to the pop/rock genre. I don't like the low angle of the imagery because I think the shot is unflattering and I'm not that fond of the the text on the CD Cover as it's placed in the left hand corner and I prefer the layering over the imaging as seen in the rest of the covers.

Pixie Lott's album cover imagery shows her pulling on a chain that is around her neck and uses a black and white filter over the image that could reflect her album title "Turn It Up Louder" because she's trying to break free from the crowd to be the best so she has  "Loud" imagery. moreover it once again has sexual connotations with the smoky eye make up and chains. I like the use of the Black and White Filter over the top of image and I also like the font in which her name is wrote in.

Demi Lovato's cover stands out the most for me because of it's simplicity. It doesn't use props and it's a close up. I like how it draws the focus to Lovato without any major backdrop and the use of different shades such a Black, White and Grey. I really like the make up used in the image such as the black lips pale skin and subtle black eyeliner as well as the definition of the eyebrows and the hair slicked back of the face. Once again the imagery has sexual connotations due to Lovato being "naked" in the image or at least from what we see as an audience it is suggested. I don't like the use of font on the Album cover as it has little contrast against the imagery and is impossible to even see the "I" in Demi. Therefore I would have used a colour that contrasted like a Purple or Red.

Taylor Swift's cover also uses a close up however the natural lighting has been placed so her face is shadowed and we see the red lips which is what I really like about the cover as it links with the album Title "Red." I also like the use of costume even though it's little that we see because it's high street fashion and is something as an audience we could possibly relate to through Personal Identity therefore linking to "The Uses And Gratification Theory" suggested by Bulmer and Katz in 1974 on how we use the media to benefit ourselves. When seeing the album cover in shops the audience (Mainly Females 11-24) may buy it because the artist shares the same personal identity such as a "Girly Girly" which has been Stereotyped through society (Tessa Perkins 1979) therefore if the artist shares the same style they may possibly share similar music tastes.

I like the use of Mise En Scene as seen in "Kelly Clarksons - My December" album cover. She wears a red ball gown and is knelt at the bottom of the stairs which has vines wrapped around it and a red carpet on it as well. The title 'My December' suggests a lower/bad time in her life maybe due to a break up which is how the audience could relate or due to a low part in her music career which is why she is knelt at the bottom of the red stepped stairs (suggesting the red carpet) and not at the top because she's not at the top of her game. Everything seems like it dying around her which if linking back to the idea of break ups it could connote the death of her heart therefore the audience which may mainly be female 15-30 would be able to associate with concluding in them maybe wanting to buy the album.

Katy Perry's - One Of The Boys is once again different from all the other album covers it's almost ironic as the title of the album is "One Of The Boys" and she laying on a pink blanketed sun lounger in a garden surrounded by flowers. She wears a red bra-let with white lace on and high waisted shorts as well as a blue wide rimmed floppy hat and sunglasses therefore she is nothing like one of the boys. I also like the use of of Font of the Artist Name and Album Title because there different from each other and makes the album seem bright and cheerful.

All Of These Images reflect "Laura Mulvey's - Male Gaze" However these women are aware of the way they're been presented to the audience within a sexual way.  Some of the images are more subtle than others such as Taylor Swifts; Red Lips on the image for her album cover "Red" the rest of her face is shadowed from above the lips however the redness and the way her lips have being highlighted still holds the sexual connotations and woman could still be looking at it wishing they had lips like these.

I also like how in the Pop/Rock Genre there's a lot of space to be diverse and it's acceptable to be as different when it comes to albums covers as it needs to stand out on the shelf.

Concept 5

I am unable to use Niall for filming as he's sprained his ankle. As a result of this I've had to change my concept and initial storyboard. My Music Video will be a performance video of my other artist Shannon which will include dancing and singing with the loose narrative taken from the lyrics of the regret after you break up with someone. The style of dance will be contemporary as it can be more emotive, this has been previously in P!NK's "Try" music video and personally as an audience viewer, it makes it easier to connect with the song which relates to the "Blumler and Katz 1974" Uses and Gratification Theory. As most people of the targeted audience age group will have experience a break up and the regret of wondering where you went wrong that may follow therefore through surveillance of the music video we feel connected with P!NK . I will post my storyboard later on.
